The atmosphere is the layer of gases that surrounds the Earth.

The atmosphere protects life of Earth. How?

  • The atmosphere absorbs harmful ultraviolet solar radiation.

  • The atmosphere warms the surface of the Earth because it retains heat from the sun. That´s the greenhouse effect: most of the heat is bounced back to outer space, but some heat is bounced back to the Earth.

The atmosphere has different layers: the lower layer and the upper layers.

  • The lower layer: it has got a lot of oxygen, so living things can live in it. Weather occurs here.

  • The upper layers: they have got a little oxygen, so living things can´t live there.

Outside the atmosphere is the outer space. In the outer space there is no air, so living things can´t live there.
