In this lesson we are going to study how population changes and how to study population.

But, what does "population" mean?

We call "population" to the amount of people that live in a certain place (e.g. a village, a town, a country...).

Do you know how many people live in the world today? Check the world population right now!!

As you can see, population changes. That´s it, the amount of people is not always the same: new babies are born, people die, people move to other places,...

So population can increase or decrease:

Increase and Decrease.jpg

Population increases when:
  • More people are born than die.

  • There are more immigrants than emigrants.

Population decreases when:

  • More people die than are born.

  • There are more emigrants than immigrants.

Immigrants are people who go to a place to work and live.
Emigrants are people from our town or country that go to another city or country to work and live.

And how can we study the population? We can use different ways to do it. The most important ones are:

  • A census: a census give us information about the number of people, the age, the jobs of the people,... Usually, a census is updated every 10 years with new information.

Do you want to check how a census looks like? Check this web.

  • A population graph: it gives us visual information about how many people live in a certain place, so it will be very easy to see if population is increasing or decreasing. Here you can see an example:

Some countries has a larger population than others. For example, do you know that in Japan live 126 million people? Yes, it´s amazing!!

In this video, you could see how difficult is to cross a street in Tokio.

Time to play a little bit now. Using this app, you could see the population of any city in the world at any time. It´s fantastic!!
